Can You See Deleted Reddit Posts and Comments?

By Evan ColePublished · Updated ·

What [deleted] and [removed] mean on Reddit, why deleted text usually cannot be recovered, and what you can still check for a post or comment that has disappeared.

Usually, no. When a Reddit post or comment is deleted or removed, its original text is generally no longer shown, and a lookup tool cannot bring it back. What you can still check is whether Reddit returns anything public for it, such as a title, a date, a subreddit, or a placeholder.

This guide explains what the labels mean, why recovery is not promised, and which checks are worth trying before you give up on finding an old post or comment.

What do [deleted] and [removed] mean on Reddit?

These labels are clues about why the content is no longer shown, but they are not a complete record of who acted:

  • [deleted] commonly means the author deleted the post or comment, or the account deletion caused it to disappear.
  • [removed] commonly means a moderator or Reddit removed it from the community.

Neither label means the content was moved to an archive, and neither one makes the original text available again.

Can you recover a deleted Reddit post?

No tool on this site recovers deleted post text, and paying for more searches does not change that. A search may show metadata that the service still has, such as a title, link, date, or placeholder. That is not a recovered copy of the deleted text.

If you have the post’s link, you can look it up directly. The result shows what is currently available, with a link back to the original on Reddit and the time it was fetched. If nothing useful comes back, that does not prove the post never existed. It only means nothing usable was returned for that request.

Can you see deleted Reddit comments?

Deleted comments work the same way, with one difference in how they look. A deleted comment often stays in the thread as a placeholder so the replies underneath it still make sense. You can see that a comment was there, but not what it said.

A lookup of a comment link may return only metadata or a placeholder. That is not recovered text.

Is an archived post the same as a deleted post?

No. An archived Reddit post is still visible: it only stops accepting new votes and comments. A deleted or removed post is the one whose content is no longer shown. See why Reddit posts get archived for the difference between archived, deleted, and a separate archive copy.

What can you check when a post or comment has disappeared?

Work through these in order. Each step is quick, and the first ones rule out the most common causes:

  1. Open the original link. Check whether the page still loads on Reddit, and which placeholder it shows.
  2. Look at the label. [deleted] and [removed] point to different causes, so note which one you see.
  3. Search by keyword. Use a distinctive word from the title if you remember one, and compare the subreddit and date with what you remember.
  4. Check the author’s public history. If you know the username, view the user’s public posts and comments. A deleted item will not come back, but a related post may.
  5. Keep the link. Save the original Reddit link with your notes. Content can change later if it is edited or removed.

Search Reddit by link, username, or keyword to see what is currently available.

Why might a search return nothing?

An empty result has several possible causes:

  • The content was deleted or removed.
  • Reddit no longer returns it, or the data service has coverage or request limits.
  • Your filters were too narrow, or a keyword or username was misspelled.
  • The account or community is private, banned, or no longer available.

For that reason, no results are not evidence about what was or was not posted. Reddit Archive reads publicly available Reddit content and is not a complete historical archive. It does not access private or banned communities and does not retrieve messages or chats.

Frequently asked questions

Does paying unlock deleted Reddit posts?

No. Free and paid plans search the same public content. A paid plan adds more searches; it does not unlock deleted posts or a deeper archive. See pricing for what each plan includes.

Is a post marked [removed] the same as one marked [deleted]?

No. [deleted] commonly indicates author or account deletion, while [removed] commonly indicates that a moderator or Reddit took it down. Neither makes the original text available.

Why does a deleted comment still appear in a thread?

It often stays as a placeholder so the replies beneath it keep their context. The placeholder shows that a comment existed, not what it said.

Can I see deleted content from a private or banned community?

No. This tool does not offer access to private or banned communities and does not bypass Reddit’s access controls.
