How to Find a Reddit Post by Link or URL

By Evan ColePublished ·

Find a public Reddit post from its URL, check the original page, and understand what an empty result means when a link no longer returns content.

A Reddit post link is usually the fastest way to look for one specific post. Paste the public URL into Reddit Archive, or open the link on Reddit first to see whether the post is still available there.

This guide covers the practical checks that help when a Reddit URL is old, changed, removed, or copied with extra tracking text.

1. Copy the complete Reddit URL

Copy the address from the browser or the Reddit share menu. A post URL commonly contains the subreddit, a post identifier, and a slug, for example:

https://www.reddit.com/r/example/comments/abc123/example_post/

The identifier is more useful than the title slug because titles can be edited. Keep the original link in your notes so you can compare a search result with the source page later.

2. Check the original page first

Open the URL on Reddit before assuming it is gone. Look for these common outcomes:

  • The post still loads normally.
  • The post is visible but archived, so it no longer accepts new votes or comments.
  • The page shows [deleted] or [removed].
  • Reddit redirects, returns an error, or the community is no longer available.

An archived post is still public and is different from deleted content. See why Reddit posts get archived for the difference.

3. Search the URL in Reddit Archive

If you want to compare the public result with the source, search Reddit by link. Paste the URL and review the returned title, subreddit, date, content type, and source link. The service only reads public content returned for the request; it does not reconstruct deleted text.

If the URL contains a query string such as ?share_id=..., try the clean path as well. Do not remove the /comments/ identifier or replace it with a guessed title.

4. If the link returns no result

An empty result is not proof that the post never existed. Possible explanations include:

  • The author deleted it or a moderator removed it.
  • The subreddit is private, banned, or no longer available.
  • Reddit or the data source no longer returns that record.
  • The URL was copied incorrectly or belongs to a comment rather than a post.
  • A request limit or temporary error prevented a result from loading.

Try the post identifier again, then search for a distinctive title phrase or the author’s public Reddit user history. A related result can help confirm the subreddit or approximate date, but it is not a recovered copy of the missing post.

Can a URL recover a deleted Reddit post?

No. A link can help identify the original page and any public metadata that is still returned, but it cannot restore text that is no longer available. Deleted and removed posts should be treated as unavailable unless you already have a separate lawful copy.

Quick checklist

  1. Open the original URL on Reddit.
  2. Copy the full /comments/ link and try the clean version.
  3. Compare the returned title, subreddit, date, and source link.
  4. If it is empty, try a distinctive phrase or the author’s public history.
  5. Record whether the result was archived, deleted, removed, unavailable, or simply not returned.
