Why do Reddit posts get archived?

By Evan ColePublished · Updated ·
SHORT ANSWER

A community can turn on Archive posts in its settings. When it’s on, posts older than six months are locked: no new votes and no new comments. The post is still visible — it isn’t deleted.

What changes when a post is archived

No new votes
The score stays put.
No new comments
Old ones stay readable.
Still visible
Archived ≠ removed.

When does a post get archived?

After six months — but only in communities where the setting is on. Not every community archives every post at six months.

Can a moderator turn archiving off?

Yes. Moderators can change the Archive posts toggle in community settings. Regular users can’t, and neither can this tool. Look for Archive posts in your community’s moderation settings. The location can vary between Reddit’s website and apps.

Archived, deleted, or archive copy?

Three cards comparing an archived post (a Reddit setting: still visible, votes and comments closed), deleted content (commonly deleted by its author or account) or removed content (commonly removed by moderators or Reddit), and an archive copy (a separate third-party read-only copy).

Questions

Is an archived post the same as a deleted post?

No. “Archived” only limits voting and commenting. It does not mean the post was deleted or copied into a third-party archive.

How do I view an archived post?

Open it on Reddit as usual. If the page is unavailable, that is a separate availability issue, not part of archiving.

When does a Reddit post get archived?

A community can enable automatic archiving after six months. This is not a universal claim that every community archives every post.

Can moderators turn archiving off?

Moderators can change the Archive posts toggle in their community’s moderation settings. Its location can vary between Reddit’s website and apps. Regular users and this tool cannot change it.

Looking for an old post or comment?

Archived posts are often still public. Search by keyword, link, u/ or r/.
